[new] Bags full of books (Avg. Score: none / Raters: 0) (#11)

Although I think I see the point that Trebor and Ryan are making about the question of decontextualizing the work, my experience of the actual exhibition Curating Degree Zero Archive was different. If you look at the CDZA web site, you find pictures of bags next to each curator's name. These are real bags - a wonderfully eclectric and crazy collection of them - and they are all there in the room, all filled with books and videos and papers. It feels like a real privilege to peek into someone else's bag, go rummaging around through the books and papers there, to see what this person would carry around with them, in a sense, what is important to this person about their work. I see this as an important context too - not so much each individual topic, but the fact that there are so many people trying to find different ways to communicate these topics, seeing so many different ways to do it. And there are so many different views of what is important, why it needs to be communicated and to whom. It seems to me that the question "Why are we doing this?" is one that might need to be asked more often, and I see this project as raising that question - honestly and openly without having the answers already planned out for the "closing event".
