[new] depth at the surface (Avg. Score: none / Raters: 0) (#2)

Thanks for the response amy - I am a bit new to this sort of thing and perhaps a bit timid. I actually do think that it is possible to structure the information derived from say net-based technologies into legitimate or at least fruitful 'epistemes.' I guess what I am wondering is whether this kind of knowledge-building, being a kind of freelance enterprise, presents younger people with an emerging alternative to more conventional forms of education. Does the internet, as an example, emerge as technology of subversion with regards to more conventional knowledge accumulation? Or must it remain in its relative position vis-a-vis books/paper-based publication as a less legitimate source of - and I'll just come out and say it: knowledge? To give perhaps a more bucolic example - I am a professional woodworker, self-taught, and have had no problem gaining acceptance in circles made up of conventionally taught cabinetmakers. They are, to draw a rough parrallel, a kind of shrinking erudite elite. The 'knowledge' subtending the skill -and this is a point I expect(and hope) will be open to some debate, has been made available through so many channels that at this point in time the apprenticeship system is even perceived by many in the field as a bit a of a luxury for retirees or a handful of well-to-do students. So, to end with a question (as per the rules): could something like this happen in the academic world?

cheers,
Michael
