The exhibition Bellissima: Koerper_Konstrukt_Schoenheit (Body_Construct_Beauty) presents current artistic works adressing the questions of the aesthetic, cultural and medial premises of notions of beauty. The selection and confrontation of the works will facilitate an examination of various facetes of this question.
The theme of the transformation of the human body through body-building or cosmetic surgery (a rejuvination of the artistic ideal of the antique), will be juxtaposed with the extension and reforming of the body through elaborate garments, jewellery, hair-styling and tattooing. As a result of the intersection with popular and consumer culture, the medial construction of the body has developed into a central theme of contemporary art. With partly
affirmative, partly ironic gestures, the presented works span the zone between
mise en sc?ne and virtuality, fashion-discourse and cyborg-phantasies. One of the exhibtion's central subjects of inquiry relates to the role of beauty in establishing cultural, sexual and political identity. Which value judgements concerning gender and "race" underlie the dominant paradigms of beauty? How can they be subverted?
The exhibition is one of the stations of the inter-departmental project seminar
"Bellissima", organised at the HGB by Tina Bara (Professor for Photography),
Alba D'Urbano (Professor for Media Art) and Susanne Holschbach.
