A note to invite you/remind you about the release of a pack of feral robotic dogs at the Cement Plant Park at Westchester Ave and Witlock Ave. in the Bronx in conjunction with the Bronx River Alliance's first day of summer Nature Festival this Saturday June 21 at 1:30pm. xdesign.eng.yale.edu/feralrobots

A great group of teens from the Bronx River Arts Center arts program http://www.bronxriverart.org/ have worked with us on upgrading the raison d'etre of commercially available robotic dog toys (specifically the Megabyte, by WowWee International). The dogs have been mechanically hotrodded for all terrain performance, they have new noses--volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors--and have been provided with a brain transplant so that now the dogs follow concentration gradients and appear to be sniffing VOCs instead of begging for plastic bones or barking the national anthem (we are working on retaining more of their original behaviors in the next model but nonetheless they are still cute, despite having had their legs amputated amongst other things).

The Cement Plant Park has known VOC and Semi-volatile Organic Compounds(SVOCs) contaminants(and others toxins), as does the adjacent Starlight Park Site. Currently these sites are in a in a volunteer remediation plan by the Con Edison that invites community response, input and monitoring. These park sites are an important part of the greenbelt development along the Bronx River. Come and see what the dogs find, and how it compares to the Focused Remedial Investigation (FRI) report commissioned by ConEd [see www.coned.com/publicissues or alternatively the information gathered by Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice 718 328 5622, or Sustainable Sth Bronx organization http://www.ssbx.org/]. Or check the feral robots website for a report.
