CNET lists viruses, intruders, and terrorists, in the same breath. Apparently inspired by their talk with the US Dept of Homeland Security. But wait - it's the CNET interviewer, not the government guy, who brings up Nimda et al as though they're relevant to terrorism... and reminds us that "the success or failure of the government's National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace hinges on private sector buy-in." There's already enough questions about what the alleged "terrorists" in Guantanamo Bay actually have done, without wondering if 16-year-old virus-writers are part of the mix. But is it governments, corporations, or both that are behind all this confusion? Lets look at some related incidents...

[- IM, I Said...

From time to time, I yack here about my mailing list and other electronic "push" communication withdrawal - i.e., I get overwhelmed by media that come to me, rather than letting me go to them when I want to (like weblogs, websites, etc.) On that note, Jakob Nielsen's thoughts on IM, Not IP (Information Pollution.) Although I agree with many of his sentiments, his proposed solution and conclusion leave me a bit uneasy. Should we predetermine what "hot topics" are of interest to us on a discussion group? Do we really want software to "protect users' time just as strictly as the most vigilant executive secretary protects a CEO's calendar"?

"We want artists to work and we want artists to learn Dutch. We want Rotterdam to look like any other Dutch city but at the moment we have more unemployed artists and crime than anywhere else"

In the midst of reading encouraging accounts of idealistic projects and conversations with friends about how many other women from our group feel the same need to "do something" that we have, a trivial little newspaper arrived in my household. Somewhere in the middle there was a small article about recently elected local politicians and their new responsibilities following local elections a few months ago.

Kenta Ohji, a philosopher involved in the (now-dormant) project NAM (New Associationist Movement), when i told him about my plans for the future, commented something like this: He said that he liked the way i based my plans on function, on what i wanted to do and achieve, instead of status and the role i would want to play. Well, that cheered me up. I was then 17 years old.
Now, three years down the road, the question what box to stick my head & shoulders into has nevertheless kept on nagging. I have even started considering professions (mostly induced by different concerned parties' propositions).. Only to wind up feeling quite uncomfortable about those boxes' inside.
