A colleague, whose girlfriend at the time was living at the other end of the country, once declared that if he took all the male sex organ lengthening stuff that turned up in his Inbox, he would no longer have to physically travel to her in order to have intercourse with her. I am always amazed, each morning, by the number of such messages that crowd their way through my awesome antispam filter. And I wonder who are the cohorts of people who, each day, spend their time inventing new ways to spell "pe}_n1s", in order to get the enlarging message of their mysterious clients through to me?

In conjunction with comments on writing communal histories, Paul also raised a question about Discordia that I would like to address separately:

Here's a silly one: For years now I've noticed new media artists quoting Borges (thanks in no small part I'm sure to Baudrillard) just as I found at art school architects and designers seemed to be so influenced by Calvino. Just for the heck of it, I'm curious what new media work would look like (or at least how we would write about it) if instead of Borges, we'd all read more Gabriel Garcia Marquez! Or Richard Brautigan. Or Donald Barthelme, for that matter. Any thoughts?

Hello Discordia Community,
I wanted to share a recent project, The Public Broadcast Cart that was part of WiFi event in Lower Manhattan at City Hall Park.
[editor's note, by Aileen] Since Ryan Griffis refers to this project in his essay posted yesterday to EA Dobbs, I have moved this back to the front page to invite more discussion.

Or artists or activists or programmers or any of the many other people producing words and ideas and important different perspectives? What happens to the important words and ideas and perspectives, when the people producing them are burdened or even overwhelmed with a sad child, aging parents, a dying friend, an altercation with the neighbors, a painfully disintegrating intimate relationship, physical ailments? Do priorities shift when vital household appliances break down?

Continuing the 'Social Software & Senior Citizens' guest host discussion.
I think Matthew Fuller's ideas for social software seem to focus more on software that is critical of itself and software development issues, but may not necessarily be more 'user-friendly' - much like the work of Sarai and The Waag. In my project, I aimed to work towards more 'user-friendly' interfaces for senior citizens, along the lines of work by Sarai and the Waag; although it certainly would have been interesting to develop some sort of conceptual work based on Fuller's definitions of social software in his essay.

I'm curious to see if a few Discordians are interested in starting an exchange about new media arts education. I posted a longer text on conflicts in new media arts education on E. A. Doobs.
