[- Ignite George Bush

Here is a poster to hang on the wall of Discordia. Next week George Bush is coming to France, the land which invented Freedom Fries (I know, I know, it wasn't France, it was Belgium). He will be coming along with other freedom fighters, Vladimir Poutine, to name but one. Our very own homeboy Jacques Chirac will be having them, though he would have probably prefered Richard Nixon, who was more in his class for trickiness. George, however, will come explain to the rest of us how him and the rest of the boys, Rummy and Cheney and Perly are the True Guardians of liberty, democracy (you name it), they did it once before, and now they're doing it again, and as for the rest of us, we are all, well, errorists.

In conjunction with comments on writing communal histories, Paul also raised a question about Discordia that I would like to address separately:

Just a note about recent additions to the Discordia Distribution options. In addition to the website here (the only way you can actually post to Discordia), there's also a couple of accomanying push media:

* Discordia Digest - emails you new stories (daily, weekly or monthly). Log in to your user account, and then click "User Prefs/Change passwd" in the box on the right. There will be a box on the page where you can subscribe.

* Feed me Discordia - Discordia RSS feed.
For those of you who like to keep track of things in an RSS news aggregator.

And the following new pull media option, for push-averse folks like me:
* Discordia Bytes for WAP-enabled phones. ...

Behind Discordia lurks a darker shadow, that only by trading glances that might pierce its hidden eyes, will we be allowed to invite it into our homes in order to domesticate it. Otherwise, it lurks in the dark outside and howls into our sleep. What I'm talking about is Dementia, and the utter relief of its antidote, Clemencia,...

[- The first principle of community is exclusion.

Can we get over the collective delusion that we have to be nice to everybody we meet on the internet? The wonderful essay by Ivan Illich, "Silence is a Commons", underpins the typical "tragedy" of internet interaction—the idiocy of the commons—except that it's not a tragedy. Rather, it's an inevitability of putting too many people in the same place and expecting, with the tone of a benevolent autocrat, everyone to behave themselves. Without some form of exclusion, what might have been a community degenerates into a worthless brawl.

Before there ever was

www.discordia.us

...there was Eris Discordia, Goddess of Chaos; feared and misunderstood by the Greeks and later by their imitators, the Romans. Eris Discordia found her Prophets in Malcalypse the Younger and Omar Ravenhurst in the late 1950's in a bowling alley in California; the inspired geniuses/madmen who later created the Principa Discordia.

She has been credited (blamed?) for starting the Trojan War after being snubbed for an invitation to a Party of the other Gods and Goddesses; see

http://www.bulfinch.org/fables/bull27.html

for the cut-and-dried version. She's not as mean-spirited as they make her out to be, though. For more information, consult your pineal gland.
